Stop it now!

http://www.imdb.com/chart/

Old Dogs made another 4.4 Million last week. Who is going to see this movie? It's like if someone told you you'd catch the Swine Flu from eating this sandwhich, and you still pay $10.50 to eat it. Now whos seeing Avatar in 28 hours?

Some thoughts on Kells and Clipse after the semester, but my mtvU Woodie Awards coverage now.

I did it 1st person cause the quotes I got were too short and disjointed. Check the PDFs to see the crazy layout me and Ale cooked up. Also, no pictures on the site because there were no web versions late Monday night when we posted.

Blockbuster

Need early gift ideas? Blockbuster's closing a lot of stores down. I went to one the other day, all previewed DVDs $6.99 all out of case DVDs $3.99. There were some good titles there, but nothing that compelled me to spend.

Scary Good

What's your favorite Halloween movie? With a new Freddy Kruger on the way, it looks like competition between villains is only gonna get tougher. I'm not too big on horror movies, but this is good and I always like this.

Can't decide for yourself? Here's some help.

Blueprint's for sale

So, if you haven't heard, Jay-Z has a new album. He's been on Oprah, Bill Maher, all over national radio, and on the cover of my new XXL. It's been an air tight marketing campaign, and after a few weeks, The Blueprint 3 dropped Sept. 11, it's time to see whether it really is that "new classic" Jay claims it to be.

1. "What We Talkin' About" (featuring Luke Steele)
Produced by: Kanye West, No I.D.
4/5

Hov usually kills the intros. "The Prelude" is one of the better songs on his weakest album Kingdom Come.

He pretty much sets the tone from the start. He's not here to talk about the past, in a non-Mark Mcgwire kind of way. He doesn't kill any particular verse, but it's more a message with Hov. The message here: stop talking about The Man, here's what he's here to do, now sit down. If he had killed the opening, it would be rated higher, but he makes his dominance known and kicks the CD off right.

3.5/5

Hottest Line: "I don't run rap no more I run the map*"

*a line he'll go onto drop throughout the album.

2. "Thank You"
Produced By: Kanye West, No I.D.

Big horns blow this appreciative song up. Jay's already been grateful in his openings, (Izzo). After a real hard and stern intro, track 2 is real laid back and breezy. The hook is catchy "Thank You, Thank You, Thank You..." Last verse of a reduced beat is the best and fully welcomes us into BP3, now for the singles..

4/5

Hottest Line: "I put 8 balls in corners without using pool sticks"

3. "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)"
Produced By: No I.D.

A good sign of a song - if you like it more and more as you hear it, this is what D.O.A. is for me. The damage with pre-released singles, is people pass over them on albums because they're already familiar. The difference is that the sax and guitar on this beat make it the year's best if not most inventive. (And Jay has always rapped over guitars unlike nay one else (think 99 Problems, Linkin Park, Unplugged, this). Plus remember, lyrics gotta count too, so Jay goes in on all rappers overusing Auto-tune. Some of the shootouts are corny (DJ Kahled, Flex) but still, a classic record without a doubt.

5/5

Hottest Line: "I’m a multi-millionaire, So how is it I’m still the hardest n—a here?
I don’t be in the project hallway, Talkin’ bout how I be in the project all day

4. "Run This Town"
Featuring: Rihanna & Kanye West
Produced By: Kanye West, No I.D.

5. "Empire State of Mind"
Featuring: Alicia Keys
Produced By: Al Shux

6. "Real as It Gets"
Featuring: Young Jeezy
Produced By: The Inkredibles

7. "On to the Next One"
Featuring: Swizz Beatz
Produced By: Swizz Beatz

8. "Off That"
Featuring: Drake
Produced By: Timbaland, Jerome Harmon

9. "A Star Is Born"
Featuring: J. Cole
Produced By: Kanye West, No I.D., Kenoe

10. "Venus vs. Mars"
Produced By: Timbaland, Jerome Harmon

11. "Already Home"
Featuring: Kid Cudi
Produced By: Kanye West

12. "Hate"
Featuring: Kanye West
Produced By: Kanye West

13. "Reminder"
Produced By: Timbaland, Jerome Harmon

14. "So Ambitious"
Featuring: Pharrell
Produced By: The Neptunes

15. "Young Forever"
Featuring Mr Hudson
Produced By: Kanye West

Running Diary VMAs 2009

Class has made me an irresponsible blogger, and I'm here to get help. The first step is recognizing your problem, right? Luckily for everyone though, I am contractually obligated through numerous recording deals and endorsement deals with MTV to do a running diary of the 2009 VMAs. For last years look here. And for some Movie Awards action look here. I'm doing this retroactively (Monday morning) I've heard about some wild antics (Kanye) and seen some here and there (Lady Gaga.) Anyways, lets get started. Program runs 150 minutes but thanks to a little thing called DVR, I'm hoping to cut that down. For the sake of facade, let's start at 9:00 p.m. when the show first aired.

9:00 p.m. - Russell Brand behind the wheel again, which is never a good thing to say even when your speaking in metaphors. What to expect? Some MJ tributes? Definitely. Some awkward live moments that MTV doesn't want but secretly hoped for all along? Probably. Gratuitous promotion of all things Britney Spears? God I hope not.

Madonna kicks things off, says "Michael Jackson" and leaves. No, kidding. She gives his life story, and guess what, it's a lot like hers! "We had abandoned him" she says. "We were busy passing judgment." Never thought Madonna would turn me from a cynic to a sap but shes pretty good.

Recreating Thriller live on stage, then it transitions to Bad. Now Smooth Criminal's on deck. These dancers are mimicking the King pretty well. The lean killed it at the end. Scream starts to play and Janet comes out. She does a Michael routine solo and its chilling. Good opening to the show, somewhat obligatory, but MTV hasn't messed up, yet.

9:21 - Katy perrys sings Queen's "We Will Rock You." She knows the Freddy Mercury tribute is over doesn't she? Brand comes out. I guess we're supposed to think he's a rock star or something, but Im almost certain he just plays one on TV.

He alienated the Jonas Bros. last year, and wastes no time making a joke about Katy Perrys "entrance" I suppose it was the easy thing to do.

Brand says no bad taste this year, then mentions Barack Obama. (And the crowd goes wild). He tells the crowd he plans to say whatever he wants tonight, sounds good.

So, Lady Gaga appears to be dressed for a masquerade, that or a scuba dive, its too close to call.

Wale is the house band, which is a really good look for him.

First award of the night is Best Female Video, presented by Shakira and Taylor Lautner. He and She wolves, oh MTV, you're too coy.

Best Female Video
Winner: Taylor Swift - you belong With Me

(Anticipation...and...)

Boom. The Gay Fish strikes again. Kanye jumps on stage grabs the mic from 17-year old Taylor Swift and says Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. Mixed reaction from the crowd. Taylor Swift is now speechless, a term that gets new meaning when you're accepting an award. MTV doesn't let her finish and plays a Tracy Morgan clip instead. You think Taylor Swift is going to jump on all her Kanye CD's and write a song about how her angst made her fell like an outcast. Alright, the cynic is back.

Tracy wants to be Best New Artist, so he's going to enlist help from...Eminem, who apparently shares a bunk bed with Tracy Jordan. Side note, Best New Artist is pretty deep this year, and there's 3 rappers, which you know makes me happy.

9:41 - Brand rambles about love for everyone, Swiftian and Beyoncic. Jack Black and Taylor Meister present, Jack Black is jacked, then talks to satan in the name of metal. If we were graphing the bizarreness of the night we went from 0 to 3 to 10 back to 4.

Best Rock Video
Winner: Green Day - 21 Guns

More thoughts on them once they perform, but they seem more interested in Jack Black's massive fake axe then their 21's award. That was a guess not an exact number. Billy Joe says play more videos, cant disagree with that.

Miranda Cosgrove and my secret new favorite artist Justin Bierber are the next presenters. Justin gives Taylor Swift some love. Members of the teen-artists union stick together I guess.

Taylor Swift performs on a subway platform in a streakers trench coat. No shutter shades on. She sheds the coat and, how convenient, a subway car full of teens looking to party safe and legally. If you say "she wears high heels, I wear sneakers" while in a ball gown and presumable high heels what does that make you?

The run out of the subway car through the turnstile and onto the street. The street fills with people. Despite the dancers on cabs, I like this performance, like what the Jonas Bros did last year, but in New York, which means, better.

(Side thought: no commercial commentary, im in a time crunch plus fast forward and I are too good of friends for me to turn my back so abruptly.

9:55 - Someone from Cobra Starship and someone from Fall Out Boy do something totally bad ass and cool. Lady Gaga performance.

It's hard to describe what shes wearing right now, its like a cat mask, but with bunny ears. The theatrics are a little out of control. Church backdrop, large vocals, dancers in all white, plus I already know whats coming. Gaga walks down the aisle with a crutch, which goes right in line with the notion of her being "very weird," the general consensus in the room. She plays some piano, but with a leg on the table. Again, who really knows. Her dress is now bleeding and she's crying lyrics. Dancers hold up her body, oh gosh, the scene turns red, she screams. And know she's suspended from the roof by her arm. Her eyes are lifeless and her whole face and torso is covered in blood. I get that she's into pop art and and being dramatic, but this is a little disturbing. I get that you're singing "Paparazzi" and they "kill" you, but scale it down Lady Gaga, for once. You're scarin' us lady.

10:08 - Lady Gaga has changed, and now looks like something out of Pans Labyrinth. She's wearing a red lace from her head to her toes, and when I say that, I mean it covers her face, her body, and her toes.

Brand rambles again, which is his shtick apparently. He brings up Lil Wayne, says he got 3 girls pregnant, even Brand, and the ladies who have vowed to raise that child - presenters Nelly Furtado and Kristin Cavlery. Between Nelly's Spanish and Kristins Vall-Ay girl talk, my heads hurting.

Best Pop Video
Winner: Britney Spears - Womanizer

Britneys on tour, which means we're spared for the moment.

Adam Brody and Megan Fox walk out to present Green Day.

I'm not the biggest Green Day fan but I say any band that's able to keep rocking out and selling records for 30 years is good. Not good? that would be Billy Joes choice to highlight his hair only by his ears. I said raccoon someone else in the room said dog. Either way, you look like a dirty animal, Billy, and not in whatever good punk rock context you might take that in. He invites the crowd on stage which is real cool because it creates total anarchy on stage, something I generally in support of.

10:23 - Pitbull seems to be moving the crowd quite terribly, which is strange cause I think he's the go to party starter.

Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner come out to present an extended New Moon trailer. Stewart, aside from the C+ haircut, is fidgety, awkward, uncomfortable, call it what you will, but theres something up with that girl.

Didnt they show a trailer at the Movie Awards? So do they just coincide promotions with MTV award shows?

I never saw Twilight, but this movie looks, dare I say, bad ass. Still two more months to wait, but its fine cause i think theres another award show somewhere in there somewhere.

Ne-Yo and Chase Crawford introduce Beyonce. She's in a Single Ladies type leotard. Shes joined by two dancers and they do the Single Ladies dance, an easy move for this performance. Classic, simple, recognizable, fun, sexy, tell me B isn't the whole package, oh and shes a smart business woman, you think Jay makes any decisions in her career, I'd bet his thumbs up goes a long way.

10:38 - Jamie Lynn Sigler and Diddy come out. Anyone who forgot about Entourage just got a friendly reminder from MTV. Diddy mentions Kanye as a nominee and the crown boo's, then a Taylor chant starts.

Best Male Video
Winner: T.I. ft. Rihanna - "Live Your Life"

Diddy accepts the award because T.I. is well, in prison. So here's to you T.I. Enjoy the moon man. Diddy gives what he believes to be T.I. speech. Man he likes to hear himself talk.

Alexa Chung and Gerard Butler present Muse in the Walter Kerr theater. Butler gets the crown roaring, then throws his ear piece out, he's a man's man, a king, a warrior, and a presenter. Muse performs. Nothing too extraordinary here, they're leaving the antics to the professionals, good move Muse.

Tracy and Em in the studio. Tray just wants to sing "Time after Time." I think he just plays Tracy Jordan everywhere he goes, which isn't bad, at all, but if you dont like 30 Rock yet then you cant really appreciate Morgan.

10:55
- Jenifer Lopez graces the stage to present Best Hip-Hop Video.

Best Hip-Hop Video
Winner: Eminem - "We Made You"

Kanye doesn't intervene because he and everyone else knows he wants nothing to do with Eminem. Em would eat him alive, like fish sticks.

Kid Cudi pays tribute to DJ AM, who provided house music last year. While were on the subject of Cudi, the new album is worth a listen. My review comes out this Tuesday. You want me to post it here just to cover all bases? Sure, no problem.

11:04 - Brand throws in an R.I.P. Adam. Then brings out Trace and Em to present Best New Artist. Tracy sings more Cyndi Lauper in hopes to steal the award.

Best New Artist
Winner: Lady Gaga

I'm telling you, the line between artistic and freaky is seriously blurred here. She needs Eminem to hold her award while she unmasks her self. She dedicates the award to God and the Gays. Interesting pairing there, but again, right on target with what we expect from her.

Serena Williams comes out and shoves a tennis ball down Jimmy Fallon's mouth. "Fire Bunin'" by Sean Kingston plays, reference to her temper anyone? She introduces Pink, who's performing blindfolded and suspended in the air. You can always count on the VMAs for strange ideas passed off as brilliance.

Oh look at that, shes also paying homage to Lil Kim and rocking a pastie on the left breast. Wow, and doing acrobatics Cirque de Soliel style. Nice to see MTV is putting the emphasis back on the music. All in all, a risky, innovative, and rocking performance.

11:18
- Jimmy Fallon and Andy Samberg present Best Video. They sing some melody, which Beyonce apparently know too. I really really really hope it anyone but Britney.

Video of the Year
Winner: Beyonce - Single Ladies

Fitting I guess since she hadnt won all night and had some controversy around her. You think Kanye was really this go arounds Bruno, setting up a Beyonce victory in the end. Camera shows Lady Gaga who seems to wearing a wreath on her face.

Taylor Swift comes out on stage and her and Beyonce hug. Swift gives her actual acceptance speech. For all my bashing she truly is a sweet and strong girl.

11:29
- Jay-Z steps out of a car. Unfortunately my recording ends there, missed the Jay performance, but saw Brand call Gaga an eskimo. Funny stuff.

Big improvement over last year's debacle. There were a good bunch of I guess what youd call "VMA moments." Till next year.

My oh my how glorious Tarantino is

Walking into a Quentin Tarantino movie, one can expect nothing but the most decadent film making. The dialogue will be rich, plentiful, and so engrossing that anticipation for every line is difficult to suppress. The violence will be graphic and excessive, with each weapon extracting it's fair share of blood. The camera work will be innovative and intriguing. But perhaps most of all, viewers can expect a story from Tarantino that is so wholly enthralling that it will go down as legendary.

"Inglorious Basterds" meets all expectations, and is quintessential Tarantino through and through.

Simply put, "Inglorious Basterds" is about a group of young Jewish-Americans who seek vengeance against the Nazi's by brutally murdering every one that crosses their paths. But "Inglorious Basterds" is about much more than that. While a work of fiction, it explores the very real feelings of anger, terror, and superiority that were all too common in World War II France.

Brad Pitt leads the cast as Lt. Aldo Raine, a southerner who's accent is every bit a trademark as his unwavering hatred for Nazi's, or "Natzi's" as he would say. Pitt is a fine leading man, but he's neither the center of focus or praise. Christoph Waltz, who plays "The Jew Hunter Col. Hans Landa, is bone-chillingly villainous, stirring fear within the characters and the audience. His appearence in the opening scene shows how capable he is to handle Tarantino's monologues and rhetoric.

And the two are just as fine as the Director's previous works. Even in his trademark multi-minute scenes, Tarantino builds the excitement slowly to a fever pitch. Conversation wanders from relevant to irrelevant before actually realizing it's true purpose, and by that point, the audience is listening so intently that words become as explosive as bombs. It's truly a testament to Tarantino's penmanship that the scenes with no artillery are just as action-packed as those that see fire and guns blazing.

It's everything a Tarantino movie should be, and it's a piece of cinema that demands you to pay close attention, to appreciate every nuanced shot and speech. But you won't mind obliging, it's what you expected to do all along.

Not quite the Red Light, but just enjoyable

Sit tight, the love fest only gets bigger from here. (I like District 9, I LOVED!! Inglorious Basterds)

There are film's that declare themselves profound examples of society and urge every person with eyes to feast on their glorious portrayal. And then there are those film's that let their merit speak for itself; they don't tell you what to think, or even what you're in store for, they simply construct a world on the screen and let you make the conclusions yourself. This latter category is what makes cinema so enrapturing, and what makes "District 9" one of the best science-fiction movies of the decade.

"District 9" sells itself not on plot or high-profile names, but rather on setting and premise. Without delving too deep into the facts laid out over blog and web pages, you can probably deduce that "District 9" is about an alien ship that appears in the skyline, and for some reason or another, earthly forces are keeping the ship anchored, with it's inhabitants forced to reside in the isolated land below it known only as District 9.

That being said, the landscape of "District 9" is so visually remarkable and piques such foreign curiosity that the storyline and action that proceed are both fully surprising and magnetizing.

The aliens, or "prawns," are disturbing, in action and appearance. The weaponry is innovative and uproariously awesome. The area known as District 9 is frightening and exciting. But the politics and the emotions that are interwoven through all of these aspects is palatable.

Director/Writer Neil Bloomkamp takes a look at fears, reactions, and prejudices that effect us in our everyday domestic lives, except he sets them in wild, alien terms that are both visually and intellectually fascinating.

"District 9" stands just as tall as other high-octane summer blockbusters. But the explosions and adrenaline pumping scenes are only a bonus to the deeper questions and themes. Is there humanity toward non-humans? Is human nature truly evil and violent? If alien life exists, do we want to interact with it, or draw bold lines between us and them? And what happens when that line gets blurred?

They're all challenging quandaries, but "District 9" merely asks them, it's up to the viewer to take away what they may.

Hellooo Worlddd

Back in Newark. Ready for the semester, and ready to start blogging again. What's that you say? My reviews of District 9 and Inglorious Basterds on the same day as my triumphant return? You got it.

Ich is amused

Had to see it...

Sacha Baron Cohen revels in the uncomfortable. The only hang up being that his latest character, Austrian TV reporter Bruno, sometimes puts the audience in the same position as the unknowing victims he humiliates.
Whereas 2006’s “Borat” had Cohen exploiting common conceptions of American views on foreigners, he tackles the gay community in “Bruno” using both nudity and questioning to make everyone he encounters uncomfortable in some degree or another.
He’s outrageous, unbelievable, and daring. But those are the qualities that make all of Cohen’s characters successful. He’s so completely immersed in a role that it ceases to be a role at all.
So when Cohen plays the gay fashion obsessed Bruno, there’s no holding back. Seeing the not-so square peg try to fit into boot camp, or hunting trips is hilarity in discomfort. But when situations get graphic, and they often do, there’s a discomfort for the audience to have as well. When he one ups himself in terms of nudity again and again, there’s wonder what sort of movie Cohen could have made without having to cater to ratings officials. The R rated movie he did make often times nothing short of pornography, granted there’s a certain situational humor to it, but not everyone has the same taste for the tasteless.
But the scenes that are for everyone are the situations Cohen builds that define irony. When he turns a MMA event into something completely different or an interview with Paula Abdul into a lesson on hypocrisy, the audience can find hilarity in the “jokes-on-you” subtlety that Cohen does best.
Mix that with a dash of shock-value, and it’s quite clear Cohen strikes again, with poignant accuracy. If you can stomach some uncomfortable encounters with the Bruno and his lifestyle, then the ones he has with the rest of the world are worthwhile windows into Cohen’s genius.

RW: Cancun

On a scale from 1 to 10, the pettiness of the drama on The Real World is 15, and the bitchiness is 12. Every time there's a behind the back shit talking session or one of the girls says "Seriously dude," I can't help but see RW/RR challenge stars in the making.

Slippin

I know I've been slippin with the daily post thing. I could say this, but I wont. Instead I'll offer you this query, How long until we go a day without hearing about Michael Jackson? I'm all for celebrating his life and mourning his death, but you know conversation about his estate, his children, why he did the things he did is all going to continue for weeks. And this is my optimistic underestimation. It could be three weeks, three months, three years, I really see them all as possibilities. Of course the downside is we'll all reach a point of ambivalence and apathy where the news is just repetitive. When that comes for you, I can't say. But I'm approaching it pretty quickly.

For the first time all season...

I'll be watching tonight's episode on Tv when it airs and not online. What does everyone think of the new season? It's pretty wacky, but I like Andy's subplot

Saturday, July 4, 2009

As is usually the case when I give myself a deadline, I got lazy and preoccupied and failed to meet it. Here's my review, enjoy

Nothing says historical cinematic recreation like a mobster everyone can root for.
Denzel Washington did it in 2007’s American Gangster,” and now Johnny Depp does his best in “Public Enemies” to portray bank robber John Dillinger — a cool as ice mobster who can deliver smooth wit about as quickly as he can pull a trigger.
“Public Enemies” starts right in the heart of the 1930’s, when the economy was at its lowest, and crime was at its highest. Enter John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), a suave bank robber whose daring heists and escapes from jail capture the attention and heart of the American public. But FBI head J. Edgar Hoover isn’t amused, and assigns Melvin Pervis (Christian Bale) to apprehend Dillinger and his cohorts.
The exciting part of “Public Enemies” lies in the recklessness in which Dillinger lives every day. Gun fights, sweeping women off their feet, fleeing to exotic cities; it’s all in a day’s work for Dillinger. But the problem is that all of these things provide no deeper insight into Dillinger the man. When he woos a woman at a club (Marion Cotillard) and is content to spend the rest of his life with her, his motives and reasoning are completely disregarded. Why he comes to such conclusions, or how they materialize so quickly is the film’s biggest let down — Dillinger seems to just do things, and the audience has to accept them, regardless of how asinine they be.
Depp is his usually stunner, while he plays the tragic hero with expertise. The bravado and arrogance of Dillinger exudes out of Depp’s every step, and riding shotgun to his capers is an exhilarating experience. But a biopic has to go deeper than gun powder and smooth talking, and “Public Enemies” rarely ever does. In its long 140 minutes, any insight to the psyche of one of America’s most intriguing figures is usually unexplored. Director Michael Mann shows all the flash in his life but rarely any substance, and that leaves the audience feeling a bit robbed themselves.

My Interview with Drake

If I were a liar, I'd tell you the radio isn't playing "Best I Ever Had" out, and I love it just as much as the first day I heard it. BUT being the upstanding gentleman I am, I'll admit it, the song's starting to wear thin on me.

But you know what, I like Drake just as much. And it has nothing to do with the fact that I interviewed him in May or that the below link takes you to said interview... Ok, maybe I am a bit of a liar.

The Mosaic Interview: Drake

I'm Sprung

Say what you will about Mariah, and me for saying this, but everything MC does gets me hooked. Maybe it's the curves, maybe its the hooks, maybe it's this new R&B feel. Her latest, it's a response to Eminem's Bagpipes From Baghdad, which shows Em going on and on about his infatuation with the singer. I really, really, really, hope this doesnt evolve into an official beef, but both of these songs are hot. Let me know which you prefer...I'll be playing Obsessed on repeat in the meantime.

Columns and Columns and things of the such

So I was thinking, and thinking this for a while: My blog is good for quick links, but I'd like some more substance, some more opinion in there. Well, I write editorials for the site thecelebritycafe.com on whatever entertainment story and figured I'd post them here as well to give a change of pace for readers (I think/hope youre there.) Here's my most recent (I'm talking minutes new), my take on Michael Jackson.

The world was saddened by the death of Michael Jackson this past Thursday, as T.V. stations aired memorials, artists made public statements and songs, and thousands of tweets declared that the music legend rest in peace. But, at least across my radar, there seemed to be an opposing opinion toward Jackson, one that judges him by his legal troubles, his bizarre lifestyle, and the general downward spiral that plagued Jackson long after his historic accomplishments. There appear to be two contrasting perspective’s on Jackson’s untimely demise — celebrating him as a pioneer or chastising his as a pedophile, regardless of a conviction.

“I’m pretty sure what he did in life is more important than how good his music was,” my news feed read, and the stance isn’t off base. But as polarizing a figure as Jackson might have been, the argument for his music is undeniable. People point to “Thriller” or “Billie Jean” as such musical sensations that Jackson’s later questionable entanglements should not be permanent stains on an otherwise straight-A report card. Of course, the sentiments of my friend call for character and morality as equally important classes to ace, but for a second, I’d like to look at not only MJ’s literal musical contribution’s, but how he changed music and dance as we know it.

He’s been dubbed “The King of Pop” and king’s, like any leader, leave a lasting impression on their dominion. Do Usher, Chris Brown, and Ne-Yo become worldwide superstars without Jackson’s influence, without his music to move and inspire them? Do The Jonas Brothers debut “Lines, Vines, And Trying Times” at number 1 this week if The Jackson Five don’t already break ground for young family-centric bands? Do Beyonce and Jason Mraz find the creativity within them if Michael Jackson doesnt force them to search for it?

Now, I certainly understand the point of those less moved by the loss of this musical icon. It’s unfortunate whenever accusations are made, especially when peculiar behavior accompany it (see Bubble’s the chimpanzee, the vitiligo, the baby dangling). It’s sad when we see O.J. Simpson in legal trouble, and it’s sad to know there was an other shoe to Jackson’s life. So if people chose to focus on those chapters of Jackson’s life, it is indeed their right and their prerogative. And they are justified in thinking that way. But the chapter that covers his stardom will be more detailed and better remembered than those on his misfortunes. And this is justifiable too. What people who chose the former line of thinking fail to remember is that “The King of Pop” touched lives positively way more often then negatively. And for the gloved one, it’s no wonder that the debate surrounds his good vs. bad touches. The bipartisan approach is universal though — a life was lost, and the world has lost one its greatest entertainers, with his gift and legend, however it may be remember, coming to an end.

MTV Movie Awards running diary

I always say, when I start a new blog and it coincides with an MTV award show, I have to do a running diary. So lets go..

8:54 - no pre-show, instead the Heidi and Spencer wedding finale of The Hills. Is this an exercise in setting the bar low?

Anyway, things I'm looking forward to: Andy Samberg's monologue, Eminem's performance, a phone call from a friend so I can actually do something exciting tonight.

8:59 - I dont know if it's MTV or Fios, but there's no noise for this Hills trailer...worse things have happened.

9:09 - Opening segment was funny, Aziz Ansari (3J) is great, of course. Keyboard Cat is typical Samberg, funny and completly stupid. The rap was alright, good to see Megan Fox has a sense of humor...err.

Breakthrew Perfromance Female: Ashley Tisdale - High School Musical 3

Is this what the MTV generation is now, High School Musical, Hannah Montana, and Twilight? Wasn't this a cool station to watch at one point? Or did that stop when you leave adolescence?

9:20 - Naturally there's some sort of text in vote, I still refuse, always. Samburg sings, I'm really looking forward to him making a fool of himself tonight.

Best Fight: Robert Pattinson and Cam Gigandet - Twilight

I don't mean to play the 'I feel old card' but seriously, I feel like Ive graduated from the MTV demographic.

Eminem Performs "We Made You" - not my favorite song off "Relapse" but of course Em can't help but make fun of this crowd to their faces. "Crack A Bottle" next, not an amazing performance, but then again, it seems Em is just reestablishing his presence right now.

9:33 - loving the "Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions" song. Will Ferrell, JJ Abrams, keeps getting better. I suppose these funny song things can run old, but that havent yet.

Breakthrough Performance Male: any chance Robert Pattinson doesnt win?

Nope. Robert Pattinson - Twilight

That's two for him already tonight. Personally, I think Bobb'e J. Thompson was robbed, if you saw Role Models you agree.

9:43 - Bruno's flying across the crowd?!!? and he's stuck, now falling, something about his poopensac. He lands on Eminem ass-to-face, he doesnt seem amused, "Get this motherf*cker off me" and now hes leaving. Damn, this is Triumph the Insult Comic Dog all over again.

Zach Efron wins some sort of award, I dont even think he knows.

For those keeping track no one over 16 has won an award tonight.

Harry Potter clip looks way cooler than the Transformers one, yeah?

9:54 - Samberg's killing with these little bits. A fake sound-editing guy air humps for two minutes and it works, strangely.

Best Kiss: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart - Twilight

Does this mean I should see this movie, or change the channel? The two awkwardly kiss...or not! huzzah.

Hey look, its Jim Carrey. He requests a Digital Short performance, which will it be "Im on a Boat" "Dick in a Box." ? Leanne Rhymes is singing "Jizz in my Pants" this is excellent. Highlight of the show, easily. Chris Isaak singing "I'm on a Boat" not quite as good, but I can dig it. Now it's "Lazy Sunday" this is all Broadway style by the way, chorus and all. Forrest Whitaker singing "Dick in a Box" this is the show I was hoping to see: Bizare antics, not teeny-bopper celebrations.

Hayden Panetierre drops some F bombs ...and I like it. Then she battles this British Orbit rapper guy.

WTF Award: Amy Poehler - Baby Mama

The beeped out explatives are in great excess, which means the shows growing. I guess HSM curfews are 10:00PM.

Best Song from a Movie: Miley Cyrus "The Climb" - Hannah Montana The Movie

She beats Bruce Spingsteen, who in any other non-twisted reality would have won.

An exclusive clip of Twilight: New Moon!!! And its just Samberg in vampire teeth dunking a basketball, which is most likely more entertaining anyways. But seriously, the real clip is coming after this comercial break - Don't drink that vile just yet.

10:16 - These Twilight actors seem as lively as, well, vampires. The clip airs, the crowd shrieks, can we move on now? thanks.

MTV Generation Award - Ben Stiller

Zac Efron, Kiefer Sutherland, and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog speak on Stillers genius. An unexpected foreshadow on my part. Back handed compliments all around. Efron admits he's here cause he loves 24, me too Zach, me too. Triumph's ape schtick misses on his potential.

10:34 - Best Female Performance: Kristen Stewart - Twilight

"The fans are the ultimate driving force" After tonight, I'd have to disagree.

Kings of Leon perform.

My facebook newsfeed just exploded about Kristen Stewart, heres a sample:

someone should take away Kristen Stewart's stash NOW

Really Kristen Stewart Over Kate Winslet?

There you go. I know the MTV movie awards were never a serious contest, but I feel a little cheated. Can we just call this the Twilght Musical 3 awards and call it day. In fact, can we just watch Andy Samberg on SNL instead?

10:47 - Will Ferrell and Danny Mcbride have cats onstage, you know, to seem more evil than funny. The cats are dead, the joke is done.

Best Comedic Performance: Jim Carrey - Yes Man

I still haven't seen a single film that's won tonight. Jim Carrey's speech is an inner monolauge over the loud speaker. Good to see he's still funny. As for Yes Man, still doesnt get the benefit of the doubt.

10:57 - Denzel and Olivia Washington present Best Picture. We got The Dark Knight, Slumdig, HSM3, Iron Man, and Twilight.

Best Picture - Twilight

Now, I saw three out of those five movies (you can guess) and was Twilight really better? Whebn the MTV movie awards first aired some 15 years ago, it was praised for giving awards to Terminator 2. In other words, they recognize the totally kick-ass movies that aren't quite Oscar material, but people still like, or love.

Well, maybe it's serving the same purpose, or maybe it's not. Either way Samberg salvaged an otherwise bore of a show.

What's Up??

Reviews sound good, but what does everyone think?

Actresses who need more burn

I fully throw my support behind numbers one and six.

Entertainment's the game now. First post is a good one. How do we feel about this? I say it could be great or a mistake.
